Today I bring you an episode filled with questions. But why questions, when all you want is answers? Because no one knows your reality and your context better than you. The question that we keep returning to throughout this episode is: What is enough? Please share your answers on Instagram @raquelcoelhobunny
The wonderful Adriene Mischler, of Yoga With Adriene, reminds us that “a little goes a long way”. But how little is enough? And how far is a long way? The researcher Schwartz and colleagues, asked themselves if people might feel worse as their options increase. In their research, they found that from a certain amount of options, the answer is yes; in the case of maximisers. Listen to more details on the latest episode of the podcast anxiety my friend- ansiedade minha amiga, available on your favourite platforms. What is enough'? I suggest you ask yourself this question, while thinking about the 3 following aspects:
health (and beauty)
money (and possessions)
community (includes family and friends)
According to Oscar Wilde, "there are 2 tragedies in life; not getting what you want, and getting what you want." The tragicomedies of life! Surely someone has told you, “Buy that, you deserve it!" The interesting assumption that comes with that is this other premiss: you need this because you are not enough. You need a bigger car, nicer clothes, a fancy restaurant because you are not enough. Once our basic needs (Maslow) are met, they then relate more to feelings of belonging, to recognition, to contributing towards our communities. Take care of yourself, so that you can take care of others. If you have the luxury of freedom, seek to make freedom get to others who lack it. One of the beauties of being alive is that we can change. “Etch and sketch your life”, as long as you take time to listen to what you want and need, instead of blindly following the clickbait and the highs and lows of others.
A book - This month, inspired by the question, "What is enough", I recommend a book which was published in the year 1900: The wonderful wizard of Oz, by L Frank Baum. Dorothy and her friends travel, each looking for something to complete them: the scarecrow is looking for a brain, to make him smarter. The tinman wants a heart, so that he can have feelings. The lion wants courage, so he can stop being a coward, but in the end they realise that they all have exactly what they need. “You have plenty of courage, I am sure," answered Oz. "All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.”
A film: Minimalists, less is now, by Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus. Don't let yourself be judged for having more or less than other people. Keeping up with the Joneses has never boded well for anyone. Stop to listen to your true inner voices, so that you can discover what it is that you truly need. In this film, Erwin McManus explains the importance of conscious choice in a simple and eloquent way: “if you get more of the wrong things, they become less”. Minimalists, less is now
